Black Magic Sanction

Black Magic Sanction (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #8)Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rachel has been shunned by all in the magical community and beyond being unable to get supplies and no one besides Ivy and Jenks will talk to her its not so bad. That is until she is attacked in the grocery store and through Trent she discovers that someone told the Coven that she is part demon, and now they want her dead, imprisoned or lobotomized. And just as she is wrapping her idea around that idea she is summoned via ex-boyfriend Nick to the Coven to face her charges and be locked up in prison. Luckily Rachel has friends and escapes also with Nicks help. What happens next is an adventure in survival that never stops. Not only is Rachel not able to catch her breath the reader isn’t either. Just when thinks are looking calm Trent possibly tries to kill her, she is attack by the Coven again, goes on the run, is attacked again and rescued by Nick again, Al shows up, Nick tries to kill her, the church is attacked, Mahtlida gets killed, Rachel gets kidnapped again, and rescued by Lee and Pierce, decides to steal from Trent, you get the picture.

As always I enjoy Rachel as a character. In this book we see a little growth and maturity as Rachel starts to come to terms with her demon half. We see Al and Rachel develop a relationship beyond just that of demon teacher and witch student. Her relationship with Pierce I don’t get. I am not sure I like him and mostly he annoys me. Rachel still makes mistakes in her refusal to not to black magic that costs Mahtlida her life and almost Jenks life.

Overall a really good book that will keep Rachel Morgan fans happy. It ties up some lingering questions about why Jenks's health is still good and Rachel and Trent’s relationship. It also doesn’t leave you hanging. You know what Rachel will do next but I am not so frantic to grab Pale Horse to see what happens next in the Hollows. Which is good, like Rachel I need a breather.
