Thank You Anne Rice, Thank You!

As an avid book lover nothing makes me happier than when I discover a new book in a favorite series is going to be released in the next year. Unless of course I discovered one of my favorite authors has returned to a series that I love after stating very publicly they will not write any more books in that series.

So this morning when I discovered Anne Rice has written a new book titled Prince Lestat that is a sequel to her original Vampire Chronicles, specifically Queen of the Damned, I was beyond happy. My coworkers are now all looking at me like I am crazy because I won't stop talking about how excited I am about the new book.

But they don't get it. They have no idea of the long relationship I have had with Anne Rice and her vampire friends. I credit Michael Jackson's Thriller video with my love of zombies and Anne Rice with my vampire obsession.

It all begin innocently enough. A friend had given me Interview with the Vampire to read, her older sister had read it and she thought I would like it also. I liked things that go bump in the night, I had already started watching horror movies and had devoured all the age appropriate "scary" books at my local library. When my friend handed me the book I was excited, it was an adult book about vampires. I read Interview with a Vampire for the first time when I was 11 or 12 (I have read it several times since then).

From that moment on I was truly obsessed with Anne Rice and vampires. I will admit to not understanding everything the first time I read the book but I knew enough. I soon had read all her books and patiently waited for the new ones to come out. And while I waited I was introduced to other authors of horror and the occult like Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

I will tell you that it is one of those books that made an impacted. I huge impacted. Reading it was one of those pivotal moments in my life. Is it weird that a fictional book had such an impact on my life? But it really did. I discovered a whole new strange world and I was fascinated by it. It started to shape my view of the world.

I am not going to say that it completely changed my view or made me a darker or twisted, I am sure those things were going to happen regardless. To be honest I am not sure how it changed me, it just did. Great books will do that to you, they will just impact you in a way that you can not describe. No matter what you think about Vampires, horror books and the occult its a really great book. With out it we wouldn't have the barge of vampire/urban fantasy books we have today.

For whatever reason I want to say thank you to Anne Rice for discovering another story to share with us about Lestat. I feel like I am be reunited with an old friend.

Prince Lestat comes out October 28, 2014 just in time for Halloween. I wonder if I can pre-order it yet.

My Favorite Reads of 2012

I tried to pick my 5 favorite books from 2012 and found that 5 was to small a number...I had to pick at least 20.  So here they are in no particular order.



Shadow of the Night: After the events in A Discovery of Witches Mathew and Diana make a dangerous decision to travel back in time to 1590 England. They hope to stay hidden, find the missing Ashmole 782 book, and a witch to teach Diana about her powers. But things do not go as planned. Finding an obscure manuscript is harder than they thought and with the country side embarking on a witch hunt its not so easy to find anyone to help. And now there lives are in danger once again as Mathews past comes knocking on the door, literally.


Bite Club: Its never quite in the town of Morganville. Just ask college student Claire and her roommates if they are not saving the town from a crazy vampire or crazy humans sometimes both. This week there is a new gym in Morganville thats being run by vampires, Ameilia's evil father Bishop has escaped his prison, vampires are disappearing all over town and now there is a secret fight club pitting vampires against humans. Just another week in Morganville.


Catching Fire: After defeating the odds and the capitol Katniss and Peeta are doing their victory tour of the districts but not everything is good in the nation. Uprising and rumblings are occurring in most the districts. President Snow has placed the job of stamping out the rebellion on Katniss's shoulder. But nothing can stop the rising tide. When the President and the creators of the Hunger Games decide to add a twist to this years games. The tributes will be chosen from existing victors of the Games. Katniss and Peeta return to the Games and to once again fight for their lives. This time they team up with other victors but nothing is what it seems in this game not even the intentions of the other tributes.


Much Ado About Vampires: Corazon and Alec were meant to be together for 100 of years but neither is willing to admit it. Corazon is the reincarnation of Alec's Beloved. Only Alec thinks he is doomed to be soul less since she died 100s of years ago and Corazon hates Vampires but fate has brought them together and Alec is determined to save Corazon from all the demons and power hunger freaks out there that want to use her for their own agenda. Corazon is determined to save herself no matter what.



Mockingjay: Katniss has been rescued from the 75th Hunger Games by District 13 and Capitol rebels. Now living under ground in District 13. Everyone wants Katniss to be the Mockingjay that sympolies the rebellion against the Capitol but Katniss is hesitate until she sees Peeta being held by the Capitol and forced to repeat their agenda. To save Peeta Katniss agrees to be the Mockingjay despite reservation about the leaders of District 13. Katniss will once again risk everything to save the people she loves.



Spiders Revenge: Gin Blanco sister's Bria is in a lot of trouble. Their enemy Mab Monroe has placed a bounty on Bria's head to flush out the assassin the Spider. And every bounty hunter in 100 miles is in town to complete the job. But Gin, aka the Spider, isn't about to let anyone harm her sister and decides to finally kill Mab. But Mab is a powerful Fire Elemental and not that easy to kill. After two failed attempts Mab finally has her hands on Bria and she thinks on the Spider but Gin has friends that will do anything to help her including taking down Mab.


Bossypants: What can one say about Tina Fey? She is witty, talented and has a wonderful self deprecating sense of humor. She is a self proclaimed nerd that is lucky enough to write, produce and star in one of the funniest shows on TV. Tina Fey tells her story in such a way that you will find yourself saying hey I did that and that would so happen to me also. Its an amazing every girl story that I would love to have every teenage girl read.


By A Thread: After the fall out from killing Mab Monroe, Gin Blanco decides a vacation is in order. So she sets off to enjoy a weekend away with her sister Bria. But when you are the famous assassin The Spider, trouble follows you where ever you go. Bria's childhood friend is in trouble and when no one else is able to help her Gin decides that her vacation is over. But things are more complicated than she expects especially after her former love interest Detective Donovan Caine shows up engaged to the very person Gin is helping. Gin will have to put aside her personal feelings if she is going to survive.


Perfect Blood: Life has not been easy for Rachel Morgan since she acknowledge that she is a demon. No one will hire her and she can't even get her drivers licence. But now that mutilated bodies are popping up all over Cincinnati both the FIB and IS need Rachel's help. Or someone to blame. Rachel along with Ivy and Jenks are hot on the trail of the killers but they keep getting away. Someone on the inside is tipping them off. To keep everyone save Rachel will have to trust Trent and truly embrace the demon part of her.


Trial of the Spellmans: Things are changing in the Spellman family. Izzy is taking a more active role in the family business, David is married and a stay at home dad, and Rae is at college and concerned about the environment. On top of all that a Chinese wall has been evoked by the Senior Spellmans to keep overlapping investigations from becoming a conflict. But not everything is as nice as its seems. Izzy has really concerns with the way the business is being run and concerns about the cases they are working. David and Rae are fighting, Izzy is avoiding Henry, Oliva is enrolling in classes and taking up hobbies and then we meet Grandma Spellman!!!!!


Last Breath: Welcome to Morganville, where if you are not on your guard 24/7 you may end up dead. Things are never quite in Morganville but they do start to take on a routine that starts to make everyone relax...a little. But nothing stays that way for long. Morganville is a powder keg waiting to ignite over Michael and Eve's upcoming wedding and to make matters worse vampires are going missing. There is a new entity in Morganville not quite sure if he is a vampire or something else Claire and friends must discover what he is up to before Morganville is truly lost for good.


The Next Always: Meet the Montgomery Brothers who are taking on an ambition project restoring an historic building and turning it in to a romantic bed and breakfast. The architect of the family, Beckett, is deeply contact to the project and the residential ghost Lizzy. But Beckett has another project besides restoring the Inn he wants to kiss single mom and book owner Claire. He kissed her once when he was 15 and hasn't been the same since.



Deadlocked: The more things change in Bon Temps the more things stay the same in Sookie's life. It seems that everyone is moving forward and making changes except Sookie. Her best friend is about to give birth to twins, Her brother Jason is engaged, love is blooming all over Merlotts.  Sookie has stalled out with her relationship with Eric and a has been ordered to attended a party for the Vampire King of Louisiana, Nevada and Arkansas and despite warnings to stay away Sookie attends the party and it unleashes a series of events that changes things for Sookie....and things aren't going to be the same.


Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter: I am not an expert on Abraham Lincoln's life. I know he was the 16th President. That his election as President along with a few other events lead to the South seceding from the Union and the start of the Civil War. He emancipated the slaves, wrote the Gettysburg address and was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth in the Ford Theater. I may know a fact or two more if I thinking about it. You may also think you know a lot about life but after reading this controversial biography you may be thinking how did they keep the exists of Vampires a secret all these years and how did we not know that Lincoln was a vampire hunter. 


The Golden Lily: Its not easy being Sydney Sage, an alchemist forced to live among Moroi. She has to help hide Moroi princess Jill among humans not always an easy task. Especially when she is suppose to dislike the race of people she is helping. But her loyalties may be shifting. After everything she has seen she starts to question her alchemist teachings and beliefs. Living among them daily isn't helping her stay on the short and narrow path she was raised to belief. As her affection for Adrian grows and she finds her self more and more enmeshed in Moroi life she places herself in a dangerous position. How does she remain an Alchemist when she is questioning their beliefs.


Happy Ever After: Parker Brown is the force behind the wedding company Vows. With help from her 3 best friends she has turned a childhood game into a successful business. She has also watched her best friends fall in love and start planning their own weddings.  Although she thinks there is no one for her former stunt man and local mechanic Malcolm Kavanaugh has different ideas. Parker is not about to give in to just any guy she has definite ideas about who she should date and Malcolm is not that guy. Mac knows Parker is wrong and is determined to win her over and change her life. 

City of Bones: Clary Fray is like any other teenager in New York with a slightly over protective mom until one night when she sees 3 teenagers kill a demon. Life as Clary knows it will never be the same. Now she can see things that others can not see, then her mom is kidnapped and now Clary is hiding from all the things that go bump in the night.  With the help of the Shadowhunters Clary is trying to unravel the secrets her mom keep hidden and find the key that will save them all.


The Red Queen: Margaret Beaufort is a the last hope of the Lancaster family. If she marries and has a son the Lancaster family has a hope of holding on to the throne of England if not then the Yorks are sure to take over.  Margaret is forced to marry Edmund Tudor when she is little more than a child. Soon widowed and pregnant Margaret determines that her son will one day be king of England. But her child is taken from her and she is married off to another man during the famed Cousins War. She bides her time and conspires with her former Brother-in-law to raise Henry to be King. 


Hard Bitten: Merit is finally settling in as Sentinel of Cadogen house. Of course nothing is ever quite in Chicago but she has settled into a routine. Until Mayor Tate threats to lock Ethan in jail if they don't put a stop to the blood raves. The blood raves have taking a sinister turn and people  ay be dying. Soon Merit learns that a new drug is making vampires lose control and while she is trying to shut down the operation she discovers Celina may be involved with the disruption and the GP is sending a representative to Chicago back in order.


The Hollow Man: Nick Belsey, London Police Detective Nick Belsey, is a man that has hit bottom with a vengeance. He wakes up on Hampstead Heath still drunk by a crashed squad car, no money, no wallet, no home and soon no job. While piecing together his night he casually starts investigating a missing person and figures out how to get himself out of this mess. It will be oh so simple to step into the shoes of the missing business man, clean out his accounts and disappear himself. Its not like there is a body and no one even knows what Alex Devereux (the missing Russian business man) looks like. The more Nick investigates the missing person the more he is sure he could get away with the crime but he has to move fast. Soon body's are piling up and Nick's own life is in jeopardy.

What if you couldn't read anymore?

I want you to really think about that for a moment.

No printed word, no words on a screen, just no more reading at all. Let's say you were losing your vision, or that it was already lost and this was your new reality.

What would you do? What would you feel? What would you begin to miss?

This happened to me. First there were headaches that made reading painful, which I thought would eventually go away, then came the frightening reality that my optic nerves were damaged, perhaps never to be returned to their former glory (HA! They were always a myopic mess!). Due to a rare disease, I was faced with two solid years of no reading for pleasure and one of those years (when I finally left my work as a math teacher) absolutely no reading at all.

I clambered on to audiobooks, a long forgotten path to tales. When he had the time, my wonderful husband read aloud to me. In the interim I thought back to all of the time wasted without my books. How many times had I watched some inane reality show instead of picking up a book? How many times was I stuck waiting on a line somewhere daydreaming or playing with my iPhone when I could have been reading? How many sleepless nights did I lay awake because I didn't have the sense to take a journey to some other place as I decompressed from my stressful day?

I mourned my loss and prayed for a second chance. The doctors said I might get some of my vision back, so I hoped. I forced myself to get on the computer and, no matter how much I had to zoom the screen, I looked at words. I ordered an eBook and read slower than I ever had in my life. It was painful, but I had finally come to know that this was worth fighting for.

"She's a reader," I'd often hear my parents say to other adults when I was a child. At the time I imagined it was some nice way to cover up my irrevocable shyness. I hadn't realized how much of my identity it actually was.

I am a reader.

For a number of years I had the worse mid-life crisis one can imagine: I physically lost the ability to read. As I have fought my way back, I have come to cherish this special part of me that I allowed to lay dormant for far to long: the reader in me has risen and she now dotes on her precious words. While I still have my computer screen on super-zoom and I honestly can not live without audiobooks, in between, I challenge myself with "real" print.

Now, when with others, I can't help but speak of books. I can't help but be the voice for the lost loves. I remember "not having the time" for reading or "being too tired" to pick up a book - life is tricky that way, steering you away from the one thing that may actually give you some reprieve; but what helps is to remember long before that was ever a thought in your mind. What helps is to think of your first book love. Those of us who are readers, enjoyed the escape into the pages with every turn, but almost every person can remember the first book that swept them off their feet. When I engage others in a conversation about this particular book from their past, no matter how busy they are, the nostalgic taste of the euphoria of reading returns. They smile. They remember. They wonder at the magic of that first book. Suddenly... reading feels really important again.

At the beginning of this post I asked you to imagine a nightmare, now I want you to remember the dream. What was your first book love? Dwell on that thought for a while. Let it simmer. Then stir it up. Next time you are reaching for the remote control, or you are feeling skewered by the day you just had, I suggest you to reach for a book - it might be a little painful, it might be a challenge to fit it into your busy day, but please don't forget that reading is a joy worth fighting for.

Do You Read Smutty Books?

The other day I had a bizarre book conversation with a friend of mine.

It started out innocently enough my friend asked if I had read a popular and according to reviews scandalous book.

I have not read this book. I may have turned my nose up at the book (I have a bad habit of not reading a book when its popular just so I can say I haven't read).

This prompted the following conversation about my friend wanting to read a naughty book (meaning lots of sex) and needing recommendations on what books to read.

• Friend: I want spice up my sex life naughty and a good story. What books can you suggest?
• Me: How spicy?
• Friend: I want it hot
• Me: Historical? Paranormal? Contemporary?
• Friend: Im ok with any but I like historical better.
• Me: Romance or just smut?
• Friend:  Are ther good smut books? I'd like yummy and melt my panties off too. 

I made a few a romance book suggestions that are a nice read with lots of sex. And then...

• Friend: Do you have any smutty suggestions?
• Me: I like the Meredith Gentry books they are full of lots and lots of sex. 
• Friend: Ill have to try them. I need a little dirty sex in my innocent life.
• Me: I've got it....you need the black dagger brotherhood books. The first one is Dark Lover. Very hot very intense very detailed steam comes up off the book. Im getting hot just thinking about it.
• Me: Run dont walk to get them
• Me: They are paranormal but not your average vampire book. Its got a whole new twist and lots of hot men.
• Me: Doing things that made me go what, how, oh my
• Friend: LOL...I'll download one tonight. I knew I could count on you.

This is a real conversation that I had via text. I couldn't make this up.

Often people ask me for book suggestions. I hate giving them because everyone has such different taste in book.

In this case I am sure my suggestion was a good one because I got the following text later that night?

• Friend: Not that you want to know...but this book is awesome and my husband is happy too! Thanks! lol.

And on that note I am now offering my services as a smutty book finder!!!

My Books are in Chaos

Recently I purchased 4 books online. When my book arrived I was very excited like I always am when my books arrived.

These books were all part of different series that I love to read. And I was clearing places for them on my many bookshelves I realized that one of the books I already had.

What???

This never happens to me.

I know what books I have and I can tell you were they are at all times.

Luckily I was able to exchange the book at a local book store, as I was wondering around the store trying to decide which book I wanted I found 2 books in a series that I love that I don't have yet. One I had read and 1 I have not read. I decided to get the one I have not read. This turned out to be a very good choice.

When I got home and was placing this book on the book shelf I noticed that I had the book from the series I had read but didn't think I owned.

So now I am all confused.

These are all series that I have read and owned for awhile. How could I have forgotten I already own these books?

I am not sure how I am going to resolve this issue...The BF would suggest I get rid of more books.

But I know that is not the answer...so my question to everyone is how do you keep your books organized?

My Books Have Hidden Treasure...Really They Do!!!

The other day while rearranging my books I noticed a tiny corner of a piece of paper sticking out of one of books.

Assuming it was a lost piece of paper that I had used briefly as a book marker, I opened the book and found not a piece of scrape paper but a dollar bill.

I am not sure how it ended up in the book but I have one of two scenario.

1. I was carrying the book around in my purse while I was reading it. At some point I purchased something, when I got my change I just shoved it in my purse and the dollar ended up in the book. I some how never noticed it and when I finished the book it ended up on a book shelf. The dollar stayed hidden for 3 years (that's when I read the book) despite my 2 moves and constant rearranging of books.
2. I actually used the book as a book marker while I was reading the book. One day while I was somewhere my reading got interrupted and I grabbed the closest thing to mark my page and it happened to be a dollar bill. I probably thought to myself when I finish the book I will put the dollar in my wallet. When I finished the book my wallet was not handy and I stuck the dollar back in the book thinking I will get it later. The book got put on the shelf and forgotten all about.

Of these two scenarios number 2 is the most likely reason. I have used money as book markers before. To my knowledge I have never left the money in the book. But if I have done it once I have done it before.

I am going to start pulling books off the book shelves and look for treasure.

Book vs. Movie

As an avid book lover I will never tell you a book is better than the movie. I dont know a book lover that will say they like the movie better (if you have examples of a movie better than the book please share).

With that being said I have seen a number of movie based on books that are really good.

Has Hollywood finally embraced the idea of reading a book before writing a script?

No I think the change has been me.

I dont go to the movie expecting it to be like the book anymore. I assume they have changed the movie and I go see the movie just to enjoy the movie.

With all that being said...I am going to go see The Hunger Games today...they better not mess with the story to much or I am going to be pissed.

This year I have decide I need to keep up on my book reviews.

Periodically I just don't post reviews even though I keep reading and reading and reading. Then I think I need to post a reviews but then I have 10 books finished and think ugh that's to much and I decide to give up. But now I am dedicated to keep reviewing books.

I know you are all relieved...all 6 of you (thank you by the way for liking my blog and following it).

Plus I have decided to do a few new features.

1. Starting next week on Monday I am going to have a link up for any book reviews you have written now or in the past. 
2. And I am going to solicit (not that kind) guest bloggers to post their book reviews and/or book commentaries.

New Used Books

This weekend I went to the local used book sale.

Its not really a bookstore in the traditional sense. But there are a lot of used books you can buy or trade. And my cousin Hanna will be happy to know that instead of buying new books I simply traded the books I have and didn't spend any money.

So with two boxes and 2 bags full of books I took them to the book sale to trade them in for new ones. The deal was for every 4 books you brought in you got 1 book and if you got 4 trade in books you get and extra book. Confusing? Think of it like for every 16 books you got 5 books. It was paperbacks for paperback...etc.

Based on the number of books I traded I got 6 hardbacks or trade publications and 13 paperbacks.

That's right I had a pile of books that high just laying on the floor by my dresser.

I was very proud of myself for finally doing something with the books. And The BF was very happy that I finally took those piles of books some where else.

That is until I stuck the pile of new books in the exact same spot the old books had been sitting for a couple months.

What? Its the perfect place for them!!!

Purging Books

I have a hard time getting rid of books. Like a really hard time. Even if I don't like the books I will keep it. To me books are valuable and you should never get rid of them. But lets be honest they don't have any monetary value. I don't own any rare books worth money but books have information and knowledge and that's why I don't like getting rid of them.

The 1st 20 books I am purging/donating.

But I made a New Year Resolution goal to purge my books. And yea I have made my first purge. I am going to do this every month this year.

I am not sure I will have as many books as I do this time but I thought I would start with books that I have read and never thought about once I put them down and books I started but never finished and they have been sitting on a shelf all this time.

What is your criteria for keeping or discarding books?

Wasting Time

On more than one occasion I have spend my time wisely by multitasking. It’s not often but on occasion I am very productive. This morning I wish I was able to multitask and be productive instead I was forced to do one thing at a time and I was more annoyed then ever.

I am in the middle of a really good book. The kind that you stay up late reading and read in the morning stead of putting makeup on and while you are driving to work you really want to be reading instead.

In fact the book is good you briefly try and figure out how can I drive through the treacherous canyon and read at the same time. You contemplate how to hold the book so you can drive and read without taking your eyes off the road. For a split second you think you have figured this out and know you can do it.

But then reality sets in and you know that it would be wrong to read and drive at the same time. After all you have seem the signs and commercials saying distracted driving is as bad as drunk driving and you know that focusing on your driving is the right thing to do. Even though deep down you are sure you are the one person in the world who could do both.

My 5 Star Books - Part 1

Today I took a challenge on Facebook which asked if you have read this list of 100 books listed as the best books by the BBC. I am not sure where the list came form but I had read 62 of them.

I then wondered what my top 100 books would be. I then decided I could never pick just 100 but here are some of the books I like to read over and over.

I then realized that I have only given 67 books 5 stars. That's 67 out of 935!!!!

Am I that picky?

Some of those books are kids books. (Dr. Seuss anyone?)

Do they really count?

Take out the plays ( I am very fond of Shakespeare) and the cookbooks, the classics and I am left with 40 books with 5 star ratings.

My Own Special Kind of Crazy

Yesterday I stopped by the local libaray and saw a brightly colored sign on the door. I of course stopped to read it and then freaked out. The library will be closed on July 4th due to it being a holiday. I immediately started calculating if I had enough books to get me through the weekend or did I need to pick up a few more.The I decided the 17 books I currently have checked out from the library should in fact keep my occupied for at least 4 days.

It takes a special kind of crazy to worry about things like that.
